Police have named the victims of the helicopter crash in a field in North Yorkshire.

The two victims were local man Ian Macdonald, aged 66, and and 16-year-old Admarsu Birhan, a German national.

The families are being supported by specially trained officers.

Ian was a helicopter pilot living in Burton in Lonsdale and Admarsu was staying with Andy Ive and his family in the village.

On Facebook, Andy wrote: “The helicopter crash near Burton in Lonsdale village, has taken the lives of the pilot and the young German lad that has been living with us. There are no words…”

An investigation is underway into why the helicopter crashed near Burton in Lonsdale, with the cause currently being unknown, but reports indicate it had been coming in to land.

Emergency services attended the incident off Bentham Road, near Burton in Lonsdale, at around midday after reports of a helicopter crashing.

Burton is a farming area near the border with Lancashire and Cumbria.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it "dispatched a number of resources to the scene" but gave no further details.
