TransPennine Express say a fire next to the track between Malton and Scarborough has blocked all lines.
Trains running between these stations may be cancelled or delayed.
The incident was reported after 3pm (Thursday 16th) with disruption expected until 19:00.
National Rail Enquiries said customers could travel on Coastliner buses between York and Scarborough and replacement road transport had been requested at York and Scarborough.
TransPennine Express updated passengers that two coaches and several mini buses have been sourced for both York and Scarborough, once in place these services will shuttle from York to Malton, Seamer and Scarborough in both directions until further notice.
Some customers have reported being advised to travel on train services from York via Hull, Bridlington and Filey.
